Helping Kids Understand Salvation: Explaining “The Old You” and New Life in Jesus
One of the most sacred moments in kids ministry—and parenting—is when a child decides to follow Jesus. But that moment often comes with a big follow-up question:
“How do I explain what actually changed?”
Kids don’t need a theological dissertation. They need language, pictures, and experiences. These help them understand that following Jesus isn’t just about praying a prayer. It’s about receiving new life and renewed relationship with Him.
Scripture gives us a powerful and kid-friendly framework for this conversation: the old self and the new self.
The Big Idea Kids Can Grasp
Jesus gives us new life. We don’t have to live the old, broken way anymore.
This truth is rooted in passages like Romans 6:3–4 and Ephesians 4:22–24, where Paul explains that following Jesus means leaving behind the old way of living and stepping into a brand-new life God designed for us.
“You were taught… to put off your old self… and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”
— Ephesians 4:22–24
A Simple Way to Explain “The Old You” to Kids
The Object Lesson: The Old Coat
Kids learn best when they can see and feel truth. One of the easiest ways to explain salvation is with something they already understand—clothes that don’t fit anymore.
What You’ll Need
- An old, stained, or too-small jacket
- A clean, new, well-fitting jacket
How to Explain It
Hold up the old jacket and say something like: “This coat used to fit—but now it’s too small, ripped, and uncomfortable.” (Try it on. Tug at the sleeves. Struggle with the zipper. Let them laugh).
Then hold up the new jacket: “This one fits perfectly. It’s clean, comfortable, and made for me.”
Now connect it to Jesus: “The Bible says when we follow Jesus, we take off our old self—our old way of living—and put on a new life that fits who God made us to be.”
Why This Works
Kids understand outgrowing clothes. They feel the difference between uncomfortable and comfortable. That physical experience helps them grasp a spiritual truth: The old way of living doesn’t fit anymore.
Talking About Sin Without Shame
When explaining salvation, it’s important to be honest without being heavy.
You might say: “Everyone has something broken inside called sin. It’s when we choose our way instead of God’s way.”
Kids already know what it’s like to:
- Be selfish
- Lose their temper
- Lie to avoid trouble
Explain that we often try to fix our hearts with things like:
- Being popular
- Having cool stuff
- Being the best at something
But those things don’t actually change us on the inside. That’s where Jesus comes in. When we believe in Jesus, He gives us a brand-new start. The Bible calls it newness of life.
Helping Kids See the Difference Between Old and New
Ask questions that invite reflection, not fear:
- “What do you think the ‘old life’ means?”
- “What are some things Jesus helps us change?”
- “What do you think the ‘new you’ looks like?”
You’ll often hear answers like:
- Loving instead of mean
- Patient instead of angry
- Kind instead of selfish
- Forgiving instead of holding grudges
That’s exactly the point. When we follow Jesus, we don’t have to wear that old ‘sin jacket’ anymore. We get to live the new life God made for us—one that fits our hearts perfectly.
Making It Stick: Old vs. New (A Fun Reinforcement)
If you’re leading kids, turn the concept into movement and joy.
The Game: Old vs. New Relay
- One pile of old, oversized, uncomfortable clothes
- One pile of clean, bright, fun clothes
- Two baskets or chairs
How to Play:
- Divide into two teams.
- When you say “GO,” one player from each team races to the “old pile.” They put on an old item, run back, and tag the next teammate.
- After a few rounds, switch to the “new pile.”
- End the relay by having everyone cheer, “New life in Jesus!”
Debrief:
“The old clothes were uncomfortable and didn’t look great. The new ones fit better! That’s what it’s like when we follow Jesus. We leave behind our old ways. We put on our new life in Him.”
The Teaching Moment
Kids will feel it before they understand it:
- Old clothes = awkward, uncomfortable
- New clothes = joyful, confident, free
Just like life with Jesus.
The Takeaway Kids Need to Hear (Again and Again)
Whether you’re a parent, volunteer, or kids pastor, keep bringing it back to this simple truth:
“Jesus gives me a brand-new life that fits who I’m meant to be.”
Salvation isn’t about becoming perfect.
It’s about becoming a new life renewed to a right relationship with Jesus.
And that’s a message kids and adults never outgrow.
